  • Consider this...

As Einstein so eloquently put it, "A human being is a part of a whole, called by us...universe...a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness... This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

An Evening of Merton and Bonhoeffer

Posted by Web Editor on 20th October 2007

6 October 2007
7:00 pm
7 October 2007
7:00 pm

The remarkable Al Staggs is coming to Seattle to perform two of his profoundly relevant and emotionally fulfilling one act plays. On Saturday evening Staggs will perform Thomas Merton: Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander. Merton, a Trappist monk, mystic, and author of over 70 books, has shaped and guided the thought and spirituality of countless social justice Christians. Stagg’s performance highlights Merton’s dedication and witness to the presence and grace of God throughout creation, and an interfaith perspective. On Sunday evening Staggs will perform A View From the Underside: The Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In this play, Staggs brings the life of one of the great heroes of the twentieth century to the stage. The audience is brought into the prison cell where Bonhoeffer awaits execution and listens to his struggles with evil, injustice, and God. Bill Moyers affirms, “When I watch Al Staggs as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, I am confronted by the deepest moral questions of what it means to be a witness and how I am using my life.” 7:00 p.m. each evening at Trinity United Methodist Church in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. After each performance a time of participatory reflection will be offered. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Group discount rates are available. Call Trinity UMC 206-784-2227 for reservations.
