  • Consider this...

As Einstein so eloquently put it, "A human being is a part of a whole, called by us...universe...a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness... This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

Tent City “open house” scheduled

Pastor Mark Dowdy invites the public to attend an open house at the United Churches of Olympia. The open house will include the opportunity to ask questions on how Tent City is run, find out what health and safety measures are in place, and also meet with Tent City residents. “The Open House is a great opportunity for our neighbors and the community to learn more about Tent City. We want people to ask questions and share any concerns,” said Dowdy.

The United Churches congregation is hosting Tent City for the next few months. Tent City moved this past Saturday from a location in northwest Olympia on property owned by the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation. The United Churches is working closely with the UU Church on the transition.

Leslie Cushman, who is moderator of the church council this year, said “I am so proud of our congregation. They have really rallied behind this effort.” According to Cushman, the council itself made the decision to host Tent City because time was of the essence and it wasn’t feasible to follow their typical process of decisionmaking. She said that church members are keenly aware that we have tremendous responsibility to do this right and not impact our neighbors.

The event will be held this Thursday May 24th, 4 p.m to 6 p.m. in the social hall of the United Churches, at 11th and Washington in downtown Olympia.
