May: Oaxaca, Mexico

Posted by Web Editor on April 8th, 2007

Land, Rain, and Fire” examines the origins of social discontent in the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. What began on May 22, 2006, as a teachers’ strike for better wages and more resources for students, has erupted into a massive movement for social change. Hundreds of unions, indigenous and women’s organizations, neighborhood groups, students and professional associations came together and created the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca (APPO). A massive campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience has brought the state government to a standstill.

El Golpe” is a more recent update on the military response to the Oaxaca movement.
